Beginning Stampers – Watercolor Pencils and Blender Pens

Coloring is one of my favorite things to do. When I was little give me a coloring book and a fresh box of crayons and I would be one happy camper! I’m sure a lot of beginning stampers feel that way, that is why this card is perfect for the beginning stamper!

One question I am asked all the time is what are some supplies you should get when just starting out? Well my friends, I have the answer for you! Pop on over to my page “What Do I Really Need to Get Started” to see a list for Beginning to Intermediate Stampers. Remember these are only suggestions, purchase what your budget allows and build on your craft stash over time!

It’s been my experience, beginning stampers can get overwhelmed very easily. Just because you see fancy cards online doesn’t mean that is what makes a card elegant. This card is simple and clean, perfect for any level stamper. To quote the elegant and classy Miss Coco Chanel:

“Simplicity is the keynote of all true elegance.”

~Coco Chanel

I stamped the flowers, butterfly and simple greeting using StazOn Ink. Next I colored the image with watercolor pencils. I will lay down a heavy layer of colored pencil so the color is very saturated on my image. Blender pens were used to lightly blend the colors together really making them pop. Finally I added a little Wink of Stella to make those wings appear shimmery!

I stamped the inside of the card with a single butterfly in the upper right hand corner leaving plenty of room for your writing.

Tips for Using Watercolor Pencils and Blender Pens:

  • Make sure you use an alcohol based ink when using watercolor pencils. Remember opposites attract – use the opposite type ink for the medium you are using or the stamped lines will run. To learn more about inks, visit Different Types of Inks for Different Jobs
  • Try and keep the point of you watercolor pencils rounded, I find it lays color down better than when the point is sharp
  • Layer your color on thick, it will give better saturation of color than if you color lightly
  • Try layering different colors on top of one another, don’t be afraid have fun!
  • Don’t rub hard onto the image with the blender pens, it will cause the paper to pill.. A light touch is all that is needed.
  • Make sure to scribble with the tip of the blender pen on scrap paper to remove the color from the tip. You can use the same blender pen on different images, just clean in between.
  • Store your blender pens on their side to evenly distribute the solution
